Expectations - class and otherwise
(video link)
1: This is a place of learning. It is expected that every student and the teacher to take responsibility for making this happen. Everyone has the right to learn uninterrupted.
What this looks like:
- Classwork and all assignments completed on time to the best of your ability.
- You are in your seat and ready to start before the bell rings
- Materials needed for the class are out and ready to use
- Teacher is ready to start the class on time, and provides a specific learning goal
- Do not interfere with the teacher’s ability to teach
- Do not interfere with other students’ ability to learn
2: This is a place of respect.
The Teacher has the right to teach uninterrupted.
What this looks like:
- Teacher treats every student in the same and equal manner
- Students listen to the teacher and each other without interrupting
- Students will raise their hand before interrupting a lesson with a question, comment, or request
- Teacher and students listen to each other
- Follow directions
- Respect personal space (This means you do not throw things, kick things, push people, hit people, etc.)
Everyone has to try their best at all times to learn and not to interfere with the learning of others.
Prepared for class
Seating
There is assigned seating in this class. You are expected to sit at your assigned seat, and use only your assigned equipment, such as a calculator.
Prep-materials
The expectation is that you will have attempted to understand the materials assigned BEFORE coming to class. If this means:
How will I know you have attempted to get the basic information that can be obtained by watching or reading something?
Do you have the information in your notes? Yes, you can take notes on something before coming to class. Reading something and writing down the big concepts and new vocabulary words comes to mind.
A bell work sort of quiz can and will be given from time to time, to see if you can answer questions to show you went through the pre-class assignment. This then gives us more time to help you with what you do not understand. Investing class time in vocabulary memorization is wasteful. There is a difference between knowing the word and understanding the word. You can know of the word, without fully understanding it. We then then can have class time giving you a better understanding of the word, as compared to wasting everyone's time while you get to the stage of "now, I having heard of the word".
SAFETY
Science Classes have an element of danger. If I say HALT, STOP, FREEZE, or something similar, you are to immediately freeze all movement (If safe to do so), be silent, obey and do not argue with anything directions I or another teacher is giving at that moment. Someone is either about to be injured, has been injured or some other dangerous situation has occurred or about to occur.
When it is time for obeying safety instructions, use of safety equipment and clothing, or you will be out of the class with all the consequences, of RULE 6 of the Student Handbook.
NO FOOD or DRINK is to be consumed in the Science classroom, or present in the Lab for your safety and health.

The expectation is that you will have attempted to understand the materials assigned BEFORE coming to class. If this means:
- Watching a video online, then you need to have watched it.
- Going through a PowerPoint online, then you needed to have gone through it.
- Reading and assignment, then you needed to have read it.

Grading Policy
Entry into the grade books will be (Your Marks) /25 Marks = some % * (assignment value) = entry. As an example Your Marks are 23 out of 25 or 92% and the assignment is 5 formative points, or (92%) * 2 = 1.84 points in the grade book. Please, do not mix up marks, and points in a grading category, and your entire final grade. While notes are generally formative, they could be a summative, and that 30% of your final grade is from formative assessments, and 50% is from summative items, like test and lab reports. Do not discount the effect of formative assessments on your grade, as if you had zero in formative areas, you could 100% every test and only have a 50%.
Attendance - You need to be in your seat before the bell rings in order to not be counted as tardy. Furthermore, if you are not prepared to immediately start class, you will still be counted as tardy. Your notebook with Cornell Style Note Paper should be out and open, a pencil or pen ready to use, and be ready to start working.
Passes and time after school.
Three fingers on raised hand is a silent way to request to go to the lavatory. Wait for some acknowledgement from me, and sign out on pass sheet. You must put your name, time-out, and time-in when you return. Only one student at a time may be on pass. If you are out for more than 10 minutes, you will have to deal the administration office about your absence/truancy from class. So, if you have to “go”, you better mean it, and know that you better be quick.
If you have some "medical" issue(s) that have you in the lavatory for a protracted time, see the nurse for a pass, otherwise the school's attendance and tardy policy is in effect.
Phones, Hats, other items of distraction.
School Uniform Policy is in effect. Phones must be silent and out of sight. (turned off would be a smarter choice, save the battery) and put away. If a phone rings/buzzes, or a student uses a phone for any reason that is not arranged previously with the teacher, will have the phone taken away and given to the office. You will have to get the phone and/or any other confiscated item back from the administration office. If you are found “playing” with any other item of distraction, it too can be retrieved from the administration office. They like to keep list of who has what taken when, so you can enjoy the rewards of your behavior across all your classes.
We will use phones, computers tablets in class from time to time, so if you need to check your grades or some other academic use, ask me, BEFORE, you attempt to use the device.
When I need your attention
At times, I will need to get everyone’s undivided attention. When I need everyone to stop talking and pay attention to me:
I will raise my hand. If I have to say something to get your attention, there will likely be consequences later.
When you see me raise my hand, you must:
- Raise your hand and keep it up until I put mine down.
- Stop talking and look at me.
- Wait for me to speak.
Procedure for end of class
The bell does not dismiss the class, I do. Do not get out of your seat until I have dismissed you. You will leave your area clean and orderly with equipment properly put away, and chair pushed in, or on the table for the last instruction class of the day, which may not be the last period/block. As practical, the last minute or two before the class is to leave is to put things away and clean up the room.
Cornell Style Notes are expected and required (most class periods)- the Cornell Note Taking System (CNTS) is not optional. So go and see the age on the CNTS, and see is your paper in the correct format for taking notes. Below is a quick set of instructions on using the CNTS. There will be some links to videos elsewhere.
This means you will have your paper set up for Cornell notes, you will use the CNTS and it will be graded.
You don‘t have a choice as I will be grading your notes based on two major categories:
Why such a big range of possible improvements?
You don’t have to believe me, as long as you take the notes as directed. Now if you are curious you can read “http://ectutoring.com/cornell-notes-increase-grades” and get the information from someone who found it useful. The webpage also has direction on how to take the note, in case you do not understand it from this presentation.
That is nice and all, but what goes where and why?
See the picture below. This is assuming you are using USA sized papers and still think in that primitive measuring system of inches. Now you do have the option of flipping the cue and note taking area, from left to right to right to left, which is helpful for the left handed, though the rest of you seem to like the original orientation. If you cannot figure out the exact places to put the lines, you can use either two to four fingers to get a measure and then something with a straight edge to help keep the line neat looking. BEFORE, you take any notes, your name needs to be in the upper right corner, class period and block, date, and page 1 of ___. As you add pages you would then put in page 2 of ___ and at the end of the class you fill in the blank. As I give points for having the lines, reasonably close to correct places, straight-like, and name, date, class period and page number, this means you have some points for the assignment, before you actually wrote anything about the class. For those who want to make their own in a word processor, https://www.template.net/design-templates/print/cornell-notes-template/ or https://incompetech.com/graphpaper/cornellgraph/ which is a cool one in that you can change it up to how you like it. Just because I tell you must use the CNTS, doesn’t mean it cannot be in a form that works easiest for you.
You don‘t have a choice as I will be grading your notes based on two major categories:
- First is did you follow the style, and
- Second is the content.
- So even if you miss some of the “good” stuff, you can get points for following directions.
- First you will get points for taking notes. Part of those points if for having all the parts on the page, and the parts in the right places.
- Second, you get points for writing down what you should anyway.
- Third, by putting them in the correct places, it is easier to grade your notes and give you feedback about what is good or bad.
- Fourth, it will help your grades come test time.
Why such a big range of possible improvements?
- If you have an 85% in a class how much higher can you and will you go?
- Now if you are sitting at a solid 20% in the class, there is a lot more room to improve.
